Dr. John Wagner was born into a world of chaos. As a child, his family struggled to overcome the effects of domestic violence, addiction, homelessness, and mental health crises. For many years, his family struggled to get on their feet. Through the kindness of amazing people and communities that stood ready to help, Dr. Wagner found stability in Las Vegas.

Dr. Wagner grew to become a father of two children, a community leader, and champion for those in pain. He holds a bachelor’s degree in microbiology, a master’s certificate in public management, a master’s degree in public administration, and doctorate in public affairs.

Dr. Wagner serves as a founding board member for The Child Advocacy Center Foundation and the Grantwell at UNLV. He has served in various board positions for the First Person Care Clinic, the Nevada Medical Center, the Las Vegas Health Communities Coalition, the Downtown Ambassador Program, the Jameson Fellowship, and the Huntridge Teen Clinic. The Huntridge Teen Clinic is a non-profit organization serving disadvantaged youth that John first came to know by being a patient there in his less-fortunate years. John returned later to serve as on its board of directors.

Dr. Wagner serves as the Director of Community Relations at the School of Public Policy and Leadership. There, he dedicates himself to the Initiative’s goals of building capacity, developing leadership and fostering community in the nonprofit and public sectors. Dr. Wagner balances the remainder of his time writing, teaching, coaching, and consulting. By teaching and applying his expertise in leadership, board development, strategic planning, fundraising, and community engagement, he continues to strengthen the community he loves.
